Proper management of network industries such as utilities, energy, and railroads has constituted a focal point of economic and legal debates for over a century, with competition laws and sector-specific regulation being utilised to maximise societal welfare, combat negative externalities, and re-align conflicts of interest.

As digitalisation becomes omnipresent in our modern economies, the regulation of large technology platforms increasingly occupies the epicentre of governmental and academic scrutiny, sometimes characterised as “the new network industries”. Indeed, it is of paramount importance to heed the lessons of the past, while constructing novel methods when necessary, to guard against potentially harmful practices in the digital economy without foregoing the massive benefits that come along. In that regard, the specific case of Turkey offers valuable insights.
